In 2017, I transitioned out of a corporate career working as Vice President of Marketing for my father’s distribution company based in the Bay Area. I was there for nearly ten years before I woke up to the fact that I could be so much happier if I was bold and brave enough to prioritize my own fulfillment and joy in all areas of my life, in my career and life beyond work. Soon after said realization, my family and I relocated to a new community in a new state closer to the mountains and far from highways clogged with cars. I started my own business as a leadership coach, applying what I experienced as a teacher and executive to my coaching with clients. My days were spent developing structure in the form of habits and routines, systems and processes, and perspectives to support my growing business. The structure gave me a sense of security in which I found room to play and experiment.
I was building a career and business for myself from scratch, and I quickly realized that in order to not burn out in a blaze, feeling overcome with exhaustion and stress, I would need a lot of help. As a top priority, I would need to learn how to help myself.
As I experimented with different approaches, I soon found that creating a daily intention for how I wanted to experience my day made me conscious of what I was committed to creating for myself. This conscious commitment was a way to clear the mindset obstacles from my path—the self-doubt, the fear, and the confusion—and create courage by way of committing to how I want to feel and what I want to do to honor that feeling.
I had learned enough to know that by asking myself three simple questions each morning, I could create a guiding structure for how I showed up throughout my day to achieve the intention I set for myself. Here are the questions I still use:
How do I want feel today?
What do I want to do (to honor that feeling)?
What is one word or short phrase to hold as my intention?
It might look like this . . .
I want to feel focused in order to complete the project ahead of me today. I will give myself ample time for concentration by reducing the number of commitments in my day. My intention for today is to be focused.

If you are on a spiritual journey of any kind, you likely know of Wayne Dyer, the self-help guru, psychologist, spiritual guide, and all-around expert on your erogenous zones which he wrote about in his break-out best seller in 1976. I remember asking my mom as a curious eight-year-old, struggling to read the book spine on the books shelved above the TV, “What are eee-roh-gee-naus zones?” It would be over a decade before I discovered a satisfactory answer, admittedly, without reading Dyer’s book.
Wayne Dyer's concept of the "power of intention" holds tremendous potential for transforming our lives. I devoured the book when I finally discovered it, having practiced my own simple version of living by intention for years. Dyer says that by harnessing this power and incorporating it into our daily routine, we can create a roadmap for living our best lives.
Here's how to simplify and apply Dyer's teachings to enhance your everyday existence: 1. Set Clear Intentions: Begin each day by setting clear intentions for what you want to achieve and experience. Take a few moments to reflect on your goals, desires, and aspirations. Write them down and visualize yourself already living them. This process helps align your thoughts and actions with your intentions. 2. Practice Mindfulness: Throughout the day, practice mindfulness to stay present and fully engaged in the moment. Notice where you put your attention and energy, and ask, does it serve you to meet your intention? Be aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. This awareness empowers you to make conscious choices that align with your intentions and avoid being swept away by distractions or negative influences. 3. Cultivate Positive Thoughts: Your thoughts have the power to shape your reality. Replace self-limiting beliefs and negative thoughts with positive affirmations. Focus on what you want to attract into your life rather than dwelling on what you don't want. Train your mind to see opportunities, solutions, and possibilities in every situation. Take consistent steps towards your goals, no matter how small. Break them down into manageable tasks and commit to completing them. Remember, every action you take brings you closer to manifesting your intentions. 5. Embrace Gratitude: Gratitude is a powerful tool for shifting your mindset and attracting abundance. Take time each day to express gratitude for the blessings in your life. Share your loving appreciation with others. Appreciate the things you often take for granted, such as your health, relationships, and opportunities. Cultivating an attitude of gratitude amplifies the power of your intentions. 6. Surround Yourself with Positivity: Surround yourself with people who support and uplift you. Choose relationships that align with your intentions and values. Limit exposure to negative influences, whether it's toxic relationships, media, or environments. Surrounding yourself with positivity fosters a conducive environment for manifesting your intentions. 7. Practice Self-Care: Nurturing your mind, body, and soul is vital for living your best life. Make self-care a priority by engaging in activities that recharge and rejuvenate you. Whether it's exercise, meditation, reading, or spending time in nature, honor yourself by dedicating time to activities that bring you joy and peace. 8. Learn from Challenges: Life is not without its challenges, but they can be valuable lessons on your journey. Instead of viewing obstacles as setbacks, embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning. Seek the lesson in each challenge and adjust your intentions and actions accordingly. Remember, setbacks are temporary; your intentions remain powerful. 9. Trust in the Process: Have faith in the power of intention and trust that the universe is working in your favor. Let go of the need to control every outcome and instead surrender to the flow of life. Trust that your intentions, combined with inspired action, will lead you to where you are meant to be. Patience and trust are key components of manifesting your dreams. 10. Reflect and Adjust: Regularly reflect on your progress and adjust your roadmap as needed. Life is fluid, and your intentions may evolve over time. Stay open to new possibilities and be willing to adapt your intentions and actions accordingly. Embrace the journey and celebrate your accomplishments along the way.
Setting an intention is planning for success. By incorporating these simple yet powerful practices into your daily life, you can translate Wayne Dyer's "power of intention" into a practical roadmap for living your best life. Embrace the power within you and watch as your intentions manifest into reality.
